Free Help for Nerves

Recently, I learned some new information about Earthing, or Grounding that is not only free, but does not require being barefoot!

In case you’re not familiar with the practice of Earthing, it involves skin contact with Mother Earth, usually by standing or walking barefoot on the ground. When you’re in contact with the earth like this, it acts exactly the same way a lightning rod does- the earth totally absorbs the heavy energy of lightning that passes down the lightning rod when it’s hit, and it will do the same for us. Our bodies are constantly bombarded with excess energy from appliances, power lines, televisions & computers, WiFi, cell phone signals….. the list goes on and on! And since we don’t typically run around barefoot any more or have leather soled shoes, which allow the energy to pass out into the earth, all that energy gets stuck in our bodies and creates excessive irritation on our nerves. The more sensitive you are, the more you feel nervous and anxious from it. So, Earthing is a lovely way to help relieve some of that irritation and feel calmer. Here’s an example of the amount of bombardment we experience daily:

Kit Measuring High Frequencies

This past December, a colleague named Kit Brucker (who is a Building Biologist) came out to my office to do some testing. He has equipment that can measure the different kinds of energies that can irritate our bodies. These energies break down into high frequencies, low frequencies, extra low frequencies and a phenomenon called dirty electricity, which occurs when positive and negative wires inside your walls are too close to each other and produce irritating static. You can’t hear any of these, but your body’s nerves definitely feel them!

Kit used his device outside to measure the high frequencies. These come from WiFi, Bluetooth and cell phone signals. The reading he got right outside my office was 100 microwatts per meter squared. If you’re like me, that means nothing, lol! But Kit explained that anything over a reading of 10 is not good for human health. We were 10 times that! Kit said that the larger the city, or the closer to downtown areas you are, that reading can even reach 1,000! And this is only one type of energy- high frequency. No wonder our nerves are always on edge! Kit also told a story of driving through south Georgia, and his phone went into SOS mode. He got curious and pulled out his meter to measure. The reading was 4. This is one reason why it can feel so good to get out, away from civilization and into the country.

Since most of us cannot move to the middle of nowhere, what can we do? That’s where Earthing comes in. Yes, you can go barefoot, but this is not always practical and it can be difficult to find ground that hasn’t been treated with chemicals. If you’re a gardener and you are working on the ground (not in pots) without gloves, that will work. You can buy an Earthing pad to put on your bed (which we do carry on the Shop page of our website), but not everyone can afford that. You can also buy special leather bottomed shoes, but you can’t wear socks and still get the effect, so that’s not always practical. Well, I have the answer!

EarthingGrounding

It turns out that there are other ways you can practice Earthing with your hands. Super easy and only takes about 30 seconds to dissipate some of that energy. There are certain materials that will conduct that energy, just like a lightning rod, and they are easy to find. The first is green pine needles on a pine tree. You grab a handful and hold on, taking a nice breath and focusing on feeling that irritation let go. Next, we have a living tree or bush with very thin bark. You hold on to a branch or the trunk and similarly, just feel the tension drain from your body. Metal that’s buried in the ground will also work. Yesterday I was walking at the park after work and just grabbed the post of a chain link fence. It worked like a charm! Cement will also work, so you can touch a curb (not my fave!) or go barefoot on your patio if it’s warm enough. Brick pavers will work, too. Be aware that wood only works if it’s a living tree or bush without bark to shield the energy. So, your deck or a wooden fence will not ground you.

Try this for yourself and let me know what you experience! Take 30 seconds, breathe, and feel the tension flow out. I’ve started doing this a few times after my workday and am really loving how it helps me switch gears and relax. Get out in the country for a hike or picnic if you can, to give yourself a break from all that city electronic noise. It’s definitely worth the tiny bit of effort to help those poor, irritated nerves!
