Preventing and healing from candida overgrowth

Posted by

There is LOTS of misinformation about candida, which is why so many struggle to heal from it. I want to help you to understand how candida can overgrow in your body and what you can do about it.

Symptoms & indicators of candida overgrowth

  • Feeling tired or run down
  • Brain fog, or trouble focusing or concentrating
  • Bloating and/or irregular bowels
  • Skin issues like eczema, rashes or psoriasis
  • Itchy ears
  • Obvious fungus like nail fungus, athlete's foot, vaginal yeast infections or thrush
  • A thick, white coat on your tongue

What exactly IS candida?

Candida is an opportunistic fungus. Its seeds are always in your body, waiting to blossom with the right conditions. It is exactly like algae in an aquarium- no one comes along and places it there, but if the pH gets too acidic, you get too many fish excreting too many waste products don't clean it often enough, or if the oxygen levels get low, the seeds of algae bloom into a problem. You can't just scrape the algae off the aquarium walls and be done with it... you must clean the rocks, put pH drops in the water and replace the oxygen stone. Same thing with candida in your body, you can't just kill it or starve it, you must change the environmental conditions that allow it to grow.

What activates candida growth?

Disrupting the balance between "good guy" and "bad guy" microorganisms in your body makes it easy for candida and other opportunistic infections to take over. (Think chronic infections like sinus, lung or urinary tract)

The first major disruptor of that balance the is overuse of antibiotics. Any more than 5 in a person's lifetime (or 2-3 times in close proximity) can disrupt the ecology. I'm not against antibiotics in certain situations- they can save your life! But they have been overused not only in humans but in animals. Some of your biggest antibiotic exposure is in non-organically raised meats, because the feed is loaded with antibiotics.

Secondly, steroids (whether oral, topical, nasal or inhaled) disrupt your ecological balance. Many people use steroid meds and don't even realize it because they are so commonplace. A simple internet search for your medication can tell you if you're using a steroid. Again, sometimes these are necessary. Just understand that there is a clean up of your ecology necessary after using them.

Pesticide exposure, chronic stress, sugar consumption and processed/junk food consumption round out the list, so it's no wonder that so many struggle with candida!

Here's what you can do

I will always leave you with positive action steps!

First, alkalize yourself. Drinking freshly juiced vegetables is a great alkalizer, but if you don't have time for that, use my tried and true combo of Chlorophyll and Power Pak Vit C. Use 1 pack of Vit C and 1 dose of liquid Chlorophyll twice a day for an adult. Children over 2 and up to 8-10 would use half that dose. Both are available on our Wellevate site, which gives you an automatic 10% discount. Other steps to alkalize include deep breathing exercises, Ion Cleanse footbaths (widely available, including at our clinic), and appropriate exercise. Eating clean, organic food helps tremendously, as will anything that relieves stress, like music or essential oils or even laughing with friends (one of my personal favorites!)

Once you have been following alkalizing steps for 2 weeks or more, you can take something to kill the candida. I get great success with CandidaStat, which is also available on our Wellevate site. Follow the bottle directions and feel free to email me with any questions. debra@nature-heals.com

Just taking a probiotic doesn't work, because they are "good guy" microbes and can't survive in the environment that is supporting candida overgrowth. But once you have followed the above steps, you can introduce probiotics, alternating between strains every month. And adding fiber, like 1-2 Tbsp of ground flax seeds per day, will help you to ferment the friendly microbes in your own gut. Of course, these are general recommendations and if you still have the symptoms of candida after following them, you could have other factors influencing your condition that require a personalized approach. Again, shoot me an email if you need help.

If you have a history with lots of factors that activate candida (and frankly, in this day and age, who doesn't?) repeat this protocol 2-3 times a year.

Please share this with anyone who might benefit and I wish you the brightest and best new year in 2020!
