All of us at Vitality Project wish you a healthy, happy and prosperous 2019! After the holidays is a good time to do a cleanse, regardless of whether you indulged or not. Here are my favorite, simple ways to cleanse. Any one of them you do is helpful, but if you do them all you'll get an even more powerful result!

First, open your drainage channels

By "drainage", I mean your ability to drain toxins out of your body. We pay attention to your kidneys, skin, liver, bowels and lymphatic systems. If you don't open these avenues out of your body, you can get symptoms when you detox. It's not true that you have to feel worse before you feel better. If you feel worse it means you're pushing toxins out of your tissues faster than these drainage channels can keep up with and it causes inflammation in your body. This is not what we want! Here's how to open these channels:

What a miracle your kidneys are! They filter toxins out through tiny "tubules" that are only 1 blood cell thick! You want your blood to be flowing freely through the kidneys, so you don't strain them. The first order of business is to drink enough of a very clean water. Your goal is to have less than 20 parts per million (ppm) of total dissolved solids in the water. Reverse osmosis and Big Berkey home filters will get you there, as will bottled waters that list reverse osmosis purification on the label. Personally, I like Penta bottled water if you don't have a home filter. They filter so completely that they even remove drug residues from the water! (Yes, our municipal water supplies are loaded with drugs like antibiotics, hormones from hormone replacement therapy, and even psychiatric drugs.) To get the proper quantity of water for detoxification, divide the number of pounds you weigh by two and that is how many ounces of water you need to drink. Adding 2-3 tablespoons of unsweetened cranberry juice (not concentrate) to each liter of water will additionally assist your kidneys.

In natural health circles, your skin is called the third kidney, because you can eliminate so much toxicity and take a load off your hard working kidneys. Dry brushing your skin before bathing each day will help to open up its ability to detox, move your lymph, and take a help your kidneys. Brush your entire body, always working toward the heart. So simple and so powerful! Email us at elizabeth@nature-heals.com if you'd like us to send you more detailed instructions.

Your lymphatic system routes all toxins from your tissues to your bloodstream, which routes them to other elimination channels. If you've ever had swollen lymph glands/nodes, this means that the system was getting clogged up with too much waste to deliver efficiently. Besides skin brushing, you can move lymph circulation by bouncing on a rebounder or bigger trampoline, swinging on a swing at the park (fun!) or even light massage.

My favorite liver cleanse is my famous beet flush! Here's how to do it:

Mix 2 cups grated organic raw red beets with 2 Tbsp Extra Virgin olive oil and the juice of ½ a fresh lemon. Stir and eat 1 tsp every 2 hours for 2 days, then eat 1 Tbsp 3 times a day for a week.

For those who hate the taste of beets, I'm working on developing a supplement that will contain these ingredients. Until that comes out, you can safely take Milk Thistle herb to help your liver. Just follow the dosage on the label. There are other herbs that can help, but Milk Thistle is the one that works best for a general recommendation without examining you.

It's critical for your bowels to move twice a day for proper detoxification. Getting adequate water and fiber are the first steps, adding a probiotic is next, and if that doesn't do the trick, I recommend a magnesium product called Natural Calm. Start with 1 tsp in the evening and slowly increase until you are having good BMs. Stronger bowel cleansing products should only be done under supervision by a qualified practitioner.

Going on a super clean food diet once you've opened these elimination channels is the final step to your post-holiday detox. Using organic produce, meats and other products is essential. If you're a meat eater, be sure your beef is grass fed. Eliminating gluten, dairy, corn, and nuts will allow an even deeper detox. Stay on this clean eating for at least 3 weeks, then add back eliminated foods one at a time to see if you get a symptom. This would be your body's way of telling you "no thanks"!

Adults only

It's fine for kids to drink water, get fiber, swing and jump, and take a little Natural Calm if their bowels are slow. Other recommendations listed here are for adults, unless done under supervision by a qualified practitioner. Happy cleansing!
