Choosing your best weight loss program

Nobody wants to put a lot of effort into losing weight and get no results. I'm going to help you to avoid common pitfalls AND pick a program more suited to your individual situation. Watch out for these pitfalls!


Slow thyroid


If your thyroid is not in optimal condition, your metabolism is naturally slower. Add to that the fact that if you reduce your calories too low the thyroid helpfully (ha!) lowers your metabolism further to compensate for less fuel, and this can be a weight loss nightmare. There's a simple home test to determine if your thyroid is functioning at its best. Take your temperature 3 hours, 6 hours and 9 hours after you wake up for about 4-5 days and log these results. If you are consistently below 98.3 degrees, your thyroid is low. Email me and I'll help you to know how to handle it. If your temperatures are not very stable, but vary by .5 degrees or more, then you have to also look at the condition of your adrenals.


Tired adrenals


Your adrenals work with your nervous system to keep different body functions stably balanced. If your body temps are variable, this lets you know that the adrenals are struggling. Additionally, you can test your pupil reflexes for balance. Stand close to a mirror and look at your pupils. Shine a flashlight toward your eye from the side and watch your pupils contract. They should be able to hold that contraction for several seconds. If you see them contract and expand a few times over 15-20 seconds, then that's another sign that your adrenals are tired. If that's the case, you don't want to do any nutrition program that lets your blood sugar drop too far, like fasting. Also, it's important to look at exercise- don't do anything strenuous like Orange Theory, but keep it gentler like beginner yoga or walking.



Nutrition options for weight loss


I'm picking my 4 favorite programs and keeping this section simple, so I don't have a 4 page newsletter, lol! It's very easy to learn more about these eating plans with an internet search. With each of these choices, be sure you drink enough water, specifically half your body weight in pounds is how many ounces of water you need every day.


Ketogenic- This is most appropriate for those with belly fat or long standing weight issues. Not for those who just want to lose 5 lbs. Keto involves eating high fat, moderate protein and less than 50 grams of carbs daily. Some women need a bit of extra carb in the evening, such as a sweet potato.


Intermittent fasting- This can be combined with any eating plan, and involves limiting your food consumption to a time window of 10 hours or 8 hours. If your adrenals are tired, this could be too much and put more strain on them.


Mediterranean- This is best for someone who just wants to adopt good eating habits and let slow & steady win the race. It's the healthiest way to eat for many health problems.



The Zone- This involves eating 3 meals and 2 snacks per day which keep the balance of 40% healthy carbs, 30% lean protein and 30% healthy fats. People with tired adrenals or blood sugar problems will do best on this plan


Final words


Your body changes over time, and these eating plans work best for different body conditions. As you get healthier, your condition will change.... For example, you might have to start with the Zone plan, but later find you don't have the blood sugar dips and that your adrenals are stronger, so you can move to a different plan.
